A Serious Defense of the Number 37


Abstract

We argue, with markedly more confidence than evidence, that 37 is the most interesting integer currently available to the general public. Three lines of proof are advanced — behavioural, mathematical, and cultural — before a rival claimant is dismissed with prejudice. No animals were harmed. One number was mildly flattered.

Ask a large enough room of people to think of a “random” whole number between one and one hundred, wait for the shuffling to subside, and then ask for a show of hands. Something faintly spooky happens. The votes do not scatter evenly across the hundred available options the way a fair coin or an honest die would insist they should. They clump. They pile up on the odd, the prime, the unroundable — and again and again, from lecture halls to livestream polls to the backs of napkins, one candidate keeps drawing an outsized crowd. It is not fifty. It is not seven, though seven does briefly threaten. It is 37.[1]

This is not a coincidence, and it is not quite an accident either. It is a confession. When a human being is asked to manufacture randomness on demand — to reach into the mind and pull out a number that feels unplanned — they do not roll dice. They audition candidates against an unspoken checklist of what randomness is supposed to look like, and 37 passes every item on that list with an almost suspicious ease. This essay is a defense of that instinct. The crowd, for once, is right.

§1 The tyranny of looking random

Consider what a number has to overcome to feel spontaneous. Round numbers are immediately disqualified: nobody believes that 50 or 100 arrived by chance, because they are the numbers you use precisely when you are rounding. Multiples of ten smell of estimation. Multiples of five feel administered by a committee. Even numbers, fairly or not, read as tidy, and tidiness is the enemy of the unplanned. So the mind, reaching for camouflage, drifts toward the odd, the prime, the numbers that no ruler ever lands on cleanly.

Now apply the filter. Between one and one hundred there are twenty-five primes, but most carry baggage. The small ones (2, 3, 5, 7) feel too eager, too close to the front of the queue. Seven is the people’s champion of the one-to-ten bracket and everyone knows it, which paradoxically makes it feel chosen rather than random — a cliche wearing a lucky hat. The teens are crowded. Anything ending in a five is out. What survives the cull is a narrow band of two-digit primes whose digits are both odd, both distinct, and safely mid-range — and there, standing almost alone in the clearing, is a number whose first digit is a modest 3 and whose second is the universally beloved 7. It is odd. It is prime. It is unround in every direction you test it. It is 37, and it has been quietly winning this pageant your whole life.[2]

§2 Exhibit A — it earns its primeness

A number could feel random and still be mathematically unremarkable underneath. This is where 37 separates itself from its neighbours: pull the thread and it keeps unspooling gifts. Start with the obvious. It is prime — the twelfth prime, to be exact. Reverse its digits and you get 73, which is also prime; a prime that stays prime when mirrored is called an emirp (“prime” backwards, because mathematicians are, occasionally, having fun).[3] And the mirror is not a throwaway. 73 is the twenty-first prime, and 21 read backwards is 12, which is where 37 sits in the same list. This nested palindrome of positions is real, it is checkable, and it is charming enough that it was proved as a formal theorem — the so-called Sheldon Conjecture, settled in a peer-reviewed journal in 2019, establishing that 73 is the unique prime with that mirror property, with 37 as its indispensable dance partner.

Now arrange 37 pebbles on a table. Not in a line — in rings. One in the centre, six around it, twelve around those, eighteen around those, and you will have laid down exactly thirty-seven pebbles in a flawless hexagon with nothing left over and no gaps to apologise for. Thirty-seven is a centered hexagonal number. It is also a star number — the pebbles can instead be laid into a perfect six-pointed star — and the very next star number after it is, of course, 73. The mirror twins are hiding in the geometry too.

And then there is the party trick. Multiply 37 by three and you get 111. By six, 222. By nine, 333 — on up to 999, every three-digit repdigit falling out like clockwork, because 111 is simply 3 × 37 wearing a disguise. This has a delightful consequence you can perform at a dinner table: take any three-digit number, cycle its digits around twice (so 258 becomes 582 becomes 825), add all three rotations together, and the total is always divisible by 37. Every time. No exceptions. The proof fits on a napkin, and 37 is the reason the trick works at all. Somewhere, a number as celebrated as fifty-seven cannot do a single one of these things — and fifty-seven, famously, is not even prime, despite a certain mathematical legend once blurting it out when asked for a “random” prime on the spot.[4] Even the geniuses reach for the wrong number. 37 does not make you do that.

§2.5 Exhibit B — the number that runs your life

Here the case escalates from “charming” to “faintly alarming.” Suppose you must hire an assistant, or rent an apartment, or — let us be honest about where this is going — settle down with a partner, and suppose candidates arrive one at a time, each must be accepted or rejected on the spot, and there is no calling anyone back. How long should you keep looking before you commit? The mathematics of optimal stopping gives a startlingly precise answer: reject the first chunk of candidates no matter how good they seem, using them purely as calibration, and then leap for the next one who beats everybody you’ve seen so far. The size of that calibration chunk, the point at which looking should tip into leaping, is one over e — which is to say 0.3679…, or, rounded to the nearest honest figure a human can act on, 37 percent.[5]

Read that again with the appropriate shiver. The optimal strategy for some of the largest decisions a person can make — whom to hire, where to live, arguably whom to marry — routes directly through 37. It is not a mystical 37; it is a consequence of one of the most important constants in all of mathematics wearing a percentage sign. But the number that falls out, the one you would actually write on the whiteboard, is the same two digits that room full of people kept blurting when you asked them to be random. The camouflage number and the decision number are the same number. At this point a reasonable person begins to wonder whether 37 is following them.

§3 Exhibit C — 37 in the wild

Leave the chalkboard and the coincidences only multiply. Your own body runs at 37 degrees Celsius — the canonical figure for healthy human temperature, the setpoint your entire biology defends around the clock. The thirty-seventh element on the periodic table is rubidium, and rubidium is a favourite heartbeat of atomic clocks, which means that in a real and unfunny sense element 37 is one of the things civilisation uses to keep time itself. Point a telescope at the constellation Auriga and you can find Messier 37, an open cluster of some few thousand stars that has been quietly numbered 37 since Charles Messier catalogued it. Thirty-seven is body heat, kept time, and a swarm of distant suns, all at once.

It saturates culture with the same casual ubiquity. Shakespeare is conventionally credited with 37 plays — a count reasonable people argue about, which is itself very 37 of it, refusing to round cleanly. Screenwriters, asked to invent a number that sounds unrehearsed for a line of dialogue, reach for 37 so reliably that fan-editors have assembled supercuts of it appearing across decades of film and television, a background radiation of “random” sevens and threes. And along the 37th parallel of northern latitude runs a whole cottage industry of conspiracy lore, an entire published book’s worth of ranchers and UFO enthusiasts convinced that the strange clusters along that line of latitude cannot possibly be chance.[6] They are almost certainly wrong about the saucers. But notice which latitude captured their imagination. Of course it was 37. It is always 37.

§4 An interlude, in which we dethrone 42

We must, regrettably, address the incumbent. For decades the popular vote for “most interesting number” has been quietly rigged in favour of 42, on the strength of a single excellent joke — Douglas Adams’s Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything, computed by a supercomputer over seven and a half million years. It is a wonderful gag. It is also, and I say this with love, a number whose entire personality is borrowed. Adams himself, asked repeatedly why 42, always insisted there was no hidden mathematics, no numerological wink, nothing there at all — he picked an ordinary, unremarkable number precisely because it was ordinary and unremarkable, sat at his desk, looked at the garden, and wrote it down. The joke is that the answer is meaningless. Forty-two is famous for having nothing inside it.

Which is the exact opposite of the case we have just built. Thirty-seven is not famous. Thirty-seven has never had a bestselling novel do its public relations. Thirty-seven simply keeps turning out to be structurally special — in number theory, in optimal-stopping theory, in the wiring of human intuition, in the periodic table, in the sky — whether or not anyone is watching or laughing. Forty-two is a punchline that got lucky. Thirty-seven is a working number that never asked for the applause. If we are handing out the crown for most interesting, surely it belongs to the one whose interest survives you switching the joke off.

Forty-two is famous for meaning nothing. Thirty-seven is anonymous while meaning almost everything. We have, I fear, been awarding the medal to the wrong twin. — The interlude, getting ahead of itself

§5 The case against, summarily dismissed

In the interest of the rigour this monograph pretends to possess, we entertain the objections. Twenty-three presents itself, backed by a whole subculture and a Jim Carrey film, but 23 is paranoid; it is a number that thinks the government is reading its mail, and we are looking for interesting, not anxious. Sixty-nine is disqualified on the grounds that it is fourteen years old and giggling, and this is a family monograph. Seven we have already met — the crowd favourite of the small brackets, too obvious to be genuinely surprising, a number that has been told it’s lucky so many times it has become insufferable about it. Pi is not a whole number and knows it. Zero is a beautiful and profound idea that is, on the specific and narrow question of feeling random when you blurt it out loud, absolutely hopeless.

Each rival, examined, folds. What remains standing — odd, prime, mirror-prime, hexagonal, star-shaped, body-warm, time-keeping, decision-governing, sky-dwelling, and still the number a whole room reaches for when asked to be unpredictable — is the one we started with. The defense rests. The prosecution, one suspects, was secretly on our side the whole time and picked 37 on the way out of the courthouse.

§6 Conclusion, Q.E.D.-ish

The number 37 is not magic. Let us be scrupulously clear about that, because the whole charm of the thing collapses into nonsense the moment anyone starts selling crystals. There is no cosmic conspiracy stitching your body temperature to a star cluster to a marriage strategy to a favourite screenwriter’s tic. What there is — and what is genuinely, durably lovely — is a single modest integer that happens to sit at the crossing point of an improbable number of unrelated good ideas, and that human intuition, groping in the dark for something that feels unplanned, keeps blindly, correctly, touching. The crowd reaches for 37 because 37 is what unstructured, unrepeatable, genuinely-surprising is shaped like in the human mind. That the shape also turns out to be mathematically loaded is the joke the universe tells with a straight face.

So the next time someone asks you for a random number and you feel that little tug toward two particular digits, do not resist it and do not overthink it. Say 37. Say it with the quiet confidence of a person who has read the footnotes. You will be in the company of lecture halls, atomic clocks, distant stars, and one entire monograph that took itself far too seriously on your behalf. Quod erat demonstrandum, more or less, if you don’t look too hard at the “demonstrandum.”

  1. The clustering of “random” guesses on 37 has been observed informally for decades and dramatised more recently in large public polls, where guesses reliably pile onto odd, prime, non-round numbers ending in seven. Your mileage will vary by crowd; the tug will not.

  3. Yes, “emirp” is a real term of art. Yes, someone got paid to coin it. No, we are not jealous.
  4. The mathematician Alexander Grothendieck, asked to name a prime number to make an argument concrete, is said to have offered 57 — which is 3 × 19 and therefore not prime at all. It has been affectionately known as “Grothendieck’s prime” ever since. Even titans reach for a random-feeling number and fumble the primeness. 37 would not have let him down.
